Lawn Mower Selection Guide By Lawn Size

When I bought my current home it was definitely what would be described as a fixer upper. I had to completely remodel the kitchen, which wasn't much more than a shell when I moved in, but I was on a tight budget. I started learning how to do the essential work that was involved, such as installing kitchen cabinets, replacing the sink, tiling and laying wood flooring, and I felt such a strong sense of accomplishment when the work was done and I had a beautiful kitchen for a fraction of the price it would have cost to pay a professional kitchen fitter. I started this blog to share what I learned and exchange tips with other home improvement enthusiasts. I hope you enjoy my blog.

Lawn Mower Selection Guide By Lawn Size

If you're looking to keep your new natural turf lawn looking lush, green and well-manicured throughout the year, you will need to invest in a good lawn mower and learn how to use the machine properly. With various types of lawn mowing equipment being sold in home improvement stores across Australia, selecting the right machine for your lawn can be a tough job. But if you know what to consider, you shouldn't have a problem making a suitable choice.

The size of your lawn is perhaps the most important thing to consider when shopping for mowing equipment. Lawn mowing can be a backbreaking task, so you will need to ensure you select equipment that can make light work of the job. Follow this guide when choosing a lawn mower by lawn size.

Small lawns

If you have a small lawn, a human-powered reel or cylinder lawn mower might be just what you need to give your lawn the finish you desire. This type of mower operates almost noiselessly because it has no engine to produce humming sounds while you are cutting the grass. The downside of reel lawn mowers is that they are not as powerful as mowing equipment that come with engines.

If you want a more powerful mower for your small lawn, you will be better off investing in a walk-behind mower. However, walk-behind mowers are quite noisy and might not be what you are looking for as an eco-conscious homeowner — the engines on these mowers produce smoke that may be harmful to the environment. If you are concerned about the environmental impact of your lawn mowing activities, an electric lawn mower would be the better choice for your small lawn.

Medium to large lawns

If you have a medium size or large lawn, reel mowers, walk-behinds and electric mowers are not a suitable choice for you. Mowing your lawn with a reel mower or walk-behind mower would be a labourious and time-consuming job. As for corded versions of electric mowers, the extension cord used to supply power to the machines might not be long enough to reach the whole lawn.

With that said, ride-on lawn mowers are the best option for people with medium to large-sized lawns. These mowers are self-propelled and they allow people to mow their lawns while riding on the machines. Not all riding mowers are the same. Some common types of riding lawn mowers you will need to choose from include rear engine mowers, zero-turn-radius mowers, stand-on mowers, lawn tractors, garden tractors, and more, depending on how big your lawn is.
